Where are you located? Siloam Springs, Arkansas
What do you create?
I make stuffed animals (fatkitties and little owls), mini clay gnome figures (NOMs), paintings, embroideries and badge/buttons. I love to learn new things though, I’m always trying out something new.
When and why did you decide to start your business?
I started out just making things for fun, and then I was able to sell some items at various places online. It’s just kind of taken off from there. I started selling fatkitties about 2 years ago, and I’ve added other items to my collection gradually since then.
How do you get the word out about your business?
The internet is invaluable. I have my own website and LiveJournal where I post new projects, as well as communities on Flickr, Craftster and Etsy. The online shops I sell through have also been very helpful in spreading the word.
Where do you see your business in 5 years?
I would love to be able to produce and sell enough work to go full time with my little business. I’m currently writing and designing projects for my very own book on embroidery, which will be out next year. I’m really excited about that. I’m really just going with the flow to see where it takes me.
Where do you get inspiration for your projects?
Everything inspires me. Most of all, animals and nature, dreams, books (especially fantasy) and other artists.
Which of the tools you use is your favorite?
It’s hard to pick a favorite! The tools I use most are all very different. I love embroidery and watercolor, and I also love digital painting in Photoshop.
What keeps you motivated?
A huge motivator for me is all the encouragement I get from my online friends and fans when I post something new! There are so many awesome artists out there, just looking at art and crafts online makes me want to get busy on my own projects.
What advice would you give to someone starting a creative business?
Start by finding something you love to do and do it. For me, the most important thing is that I enjoy what I’m doing. As far as making a business out of what you love, just start promoting yourself wherever and however you can. The more you get your work out there, the better you’ll do.
What's the best gift you've ever received?
My husband’s marriage proposal. :)
Can you recommend a good book or great music?
I’m currently re-reading the Harry Potter books, and I’ve recently discovered the band Air. I love them.
Who is your favorite indie designer/artist?
Oh, I have lots. Some recent faves are Lori Marie of pretty little things and Emily Martin of The Black Apple.
