Deepshade Creations

What do you create?

I create jewelry, mainly using semi-precious stone, shell, crystal, and glass. Most of my pieces are my own original designs, but the idea of custom work has been brought up to me a lot recently, so I've started branching into that as well.

How did you come up with your company name?

Shade is part of an alias I've used for years (it came from an old video game I love), so when I started brainstorming names, it was one of the words I tossed around. There isn't a real meaning behind the name, it was more a matter of putting words together until I found something that sounded good and I knew I wouldn't get tired of. I added Creations to the end of it because my wise friends thought Deepshade by itself sounded too much like a cosmetics line.

When and why did you decide to start your business?
I've been making jewelry since I was in elementary school, and one year I set up a table at a kids' craft show the local library held. My little daisy chain bracelets were a hit, and I loved knowing that people were out there wearing something that I had made myself. A decade later, when I was changing my career path from Spanish translation to radio broadcasting to FX makeup artistry to everything else under the sun, and working part-time jobs I really disliked, it hit me that I could try to make a living doing what I'd always loved to do and not have to play by a boss's rules anymore. Everyone always says that you should just do what you love, and it all finally clicked for me.

Where do you get your inspiration for your projects?

A lot of it is just picking up beads and pendants that catch my eye, then going through trial and error piecing them together with things I already have until I find a design that works. I like the earthy and natural-looking, but I'm also really drawn to things that look straight out of a fairy tale, so my jewelry can often end up being pretty eclectic! I also write when I have time, so I like to take characters
from my stories and design jewelry that I think they might like to wear (so if you ever see a necklace that appears to have been named after someone, it's safe to guess that that's why).

What is your main goal for this year?

Now that I've gotten past most of the not-so-much-fun part of getting Deepshade Creations officially up and running, I'd like to focus mainlyon getting the name out there. I need to do a lot of spreading the word, and I think that another goal, which is getting back into the craft show circuit, will help that a lot.

What advice would you give to someone starting a creative business?

The most important thing is to just be confident in yourself and everything that you're doing. There are always going to be people out there who brush you off with comments like, "That's cute. So what do you really do?" and refuse to take you seriously. You can't let them get to you, because they're in the minority, and really just jealous that they haven't had it in them to accomplish so much on their own as you have! Most people I encounter think it's amazing and are incredibly supportive when they find out I make my own jewelry and started my own business, and you'll absolutely get the same reaction when you start putting yourself out there.

Which of your products is your favorite? Why?

Right now it's the Upperland Necklace. It's very whimsical and springtime-ish, and I love the way the colors of the stones worked out together. I also have a gemstone donut pendant that I would probably wear everyday if I didn't have so many other necklaces to choose from. It's very simple, and that means it goes with everything!

And just out of curiosity, what’s your favorite tool of your trade?

A very sharp pair of scissors. A good, tough pair that can even stand up to cutting wire (yeah, I do go through scissors pretty quick)!

Cherry Momma

What do you create?
I make children’s and women’s accessories with a rock n’ roll twist! Things like baby & toddler clothing, baby blankets, bibs, burp pads, diaper bags, pocket mirrors, bottle openers, key fobs, etc. I’m getting ready to expand into housewares with kitchen and bath accessories. I hope to have my adult clothing line up by the holidays. I’ve already go some designs ready to go!

How did you come up with your company name?
I was thinking of things I love and associate with rock n’ roll and kept coming back to cherries. So I went with it! Using two cherries to form a heart for my logo ties it into the family focus that Cherry Momma has.

When and why did you decide to start your business?
I started my first business, Mamie Originals , after my daughter was born because I searched high and low for a diaper bag that I truly LOVED. When I couldn’t find it and couldn’t even find someone to MAKE one for me, I decided to take matters into my own hands, taught myself to sew and made my own! After a few baby shower gifts, I started Mamie Originals. While I loved what I did, Mamie’s ended up being more mainstream than I had originally intended, so I started Cherry Momma to indulge my love for tattoos, skulls, flames, cherries and leopard print! What baby doesn’t look too cute for words in glitter skulls?!

Where do you get your inspiration for your projects?
My inspiration directly comes from my 18 month old daughter, Eliza. Almost all of my t-shirt designs have sprouted from staying home with her, from “Feisty” to “I’m the reason Momma drinks”! She’s the coolest little kid I’ve ever met, but of course, I’m biased! But she’s a dancing fool, so how could you NOT think she’s awesome?! =) I often find myself thinking of something that would be cute on her and a new pattern or design is born!

What is your main goal for this year?
I have several goals for this year! I don’t know that I could pick just one.

  • Cherry Momma has been extremely well-received and has taken off even faster than I had expected! I plan to close Mamie Originals by the end of the year so that I can focus on Cherry Momma and Lightning Bug Designs , a website design business I’m starting with another crafty lady and creative business owner whose work I adore, Lauren Hardage of Wise Rabbit .
  • I want to continue fine-tuning the balance between working from home and being a great mom, which is hard for me sometimes. Having my work 15 feet away makes it incredibly tempting to try to work all the time!
  • I want to get to the point with Cherry Momma where most of the sales are from the website, wholesale accounts and 5-8 bigger indie craft shows a year. I think that will hopefully be a lot easier because of my participation in Indie Finds , an amazing advertising and PR cooperative. Be on the lookout for our ads in magazines all over! I also hope to increase my wholesale accounts both in number and sales volume!
  • Did I mention that I’m ridiculously excited about Lightning Bug Designs?! I have certain sales goals for that as well that I think we’ll have no problem hitting.
What advice would you give to someone starting a creative business?
I think that entrepreneurship is one of the best things ever, especially for mothers who’d like to stay home with their children. Being a work-at-home mom has been a blessing for me. For those who’d like to start a creative business, I’d say to seek out like-minded people that are DOING and not just TALKING. While you want them to share your excitement, your friends and family may not always the best support you can find. That’s why it’s key to surround yourself as much as possible with other crafty and creative people that approach it as a BUSINESS and not a hobby.

There are several online forums for crafty business owners and also check your town for a Craft Mafia. I’m the founder of the Richmond Craft Mafia and it’s been such a great part of my life. Being able to talk with other ladies (no men, but not on purpose!) who are going through the same trials has been a lifesaver for my sanity.

Also, be sure that you LOVE what you make and that you have a passion for it, otherwise it’s eventually just going to be a J-O-B like any other. Working from home can be even harder than working outside of the home, so make sure it’s what you want to be doing!

And just out of curiosity, what’s your favorite tool of your trade?
Oh man, what to choose! Right now, I’d say my new heat press which I use in making my t-shirts.

On a Friday

What do you create?
I create jewelry from sterling silver, gold-filled and vermeil metals along with semi-precious stones and fresh water pearls.

How did you come up with your company name?
The name On a Friday actually came about when I was trying to rename myself. I used to be “Under the Hula Moon”. I decided to change the company name to something that had a little different meaning to it. My husband and I were talking one night about how I’m always up until very early on Saturday mornings. It turned out that most of the time I was up all night on Fridays making things for my business. So that’s where “On a Friday” came from. Of course, Friday nights seemed to be when I consumed caffeinated beverages as well!

When and why did you decide to start your business?

I had been making jewelry off and on for several years. When I would wear a piece that I had made my friends and family would encourage me to go to craft fairs to sell them. I was reluctant at first but decided to give it a try. It is a great way for me to express my creativity since my daily work does not really allow for that. On a Friday (the website) was actually “born” just in September of 2005.

Where do you get your inspiration for your projects?
Inspiration can really be found anywhere. A lot of times I’ll see things when I am walking around not expecting to find anything in particular. From nature or from someone walking down the street. Just looking at the gorgeous stones, pearls or other materials I use is inspiration in itself. All of the textures and colors…it is like being in a candy store!

What is your main goal for this year?
I would like to concentrate on expanding where my jewelry is sold. Currently I have my jewelry on my website and at a couple of local brick and mortar stores on consignment. I have had some wholesale inquiries and would love to go forward with those and help that side of my business grow. I’m also always open to learning new techniques to bring more to my customers.

What advice would you give to someone starting a creative business?

First you should make sure that you really love what you create because starting a business is a lot of work. But if you really love what you make that will get you far. Do research, join supportive communities of crafters or other businesspersons (that has really helped me out!) and enroll in classes if available. Having a positive outlook on the whole experience is quite helpful as well. If you just believe in yourself and your products it will show! Go for it!

Which of your products is your favorite? Why?

My favorite jewelry item to make would have to be earrings. They are my best seller and it really is quite amazing how a pair of earrings can change your whole look.

What's your favorite tool of your trade?

There are a bunch of tools that are fun and great so it’s hard to pinpoint one. But how about my hands and imagination? Without those I would not be able to truly create any of my pieces. I think that just being able to sit and imagine what work well together (colors, textures, chains, etc.) is the best tool.

2 Fresh Petunias

What do you create?

I create one of a kind purses, bags and accessories using vintage inspired
fabrics. I also recently added a small line of home décor items and will also be bringing back my line of embellished tees for little girls. I love fabric and love finding new ways to use it.

How did you come up with your company name?

My company 2 fresh petunias is named after my two daughters. Before I became
a mother I was an art teacher and used to call my students petunias. When I had my daughter I did the same. When I had my second little girl…I then had two petunias and they were getting older..they became “fresh” the way little girls do! From that point on they were the 2 fresh petunias. Since the business grew out of their obsession with my things; scarves, purses, belts, bags. I knew that it was a perfect fit for my company name.

When and why did you decide to start your business?

I have always been in love with fabric and had amassed a huge collection
since my college fashion design days. I was sewing outfits for my little girls and people started asking where I “found” that. When I told them that I had made it myself, orders started coming in. One day I decided to replace a purse that my daughter had taken with some of my favorite vintage fabrics.

I had never made a purse but once I figured it all out I thought it was
really cool. So I made a few more. Heading out to a party I grabbed one of my purses. By the end of the night I had a business. I became known as the local “purse girl”. I started hosting custom handbag parties and people started asking about a website. From that point on its been a whirlwind. I never thought I would be doing this…but its so much fun!

Where do you get your inspiration for your projects?

My fabrics. I am truly in love with fabric and pretty little things.
Sometimes I just sit and look at them and it all comes together. I am also obsessed with flowers and find myself sewing them on everything. As the business has grown I have broken out of the “what will SELL” phase and now create more of what I love myself. I think that’s when you are truly happiest and inspiration can really blossom.

What is your main goal for this year?

My first and main goal was to get the new renovation to the website up and
running, which just hit a few weeks ago. My first website was cute, but totally not what I wanted. With my business moving from custom creations to more of my own one of a kind designs I think that my primary goal now will be to sit down and gather all my ideas and put them into fabric. With two small children its difficult to carve out that “business time”, so time management and structuring my work time will be my goals along with some advertising adventures!

What advice would you give to someone starting a creative business?

Create what you want. Its so easy to get caught up in what you think might
sell. Sure, it might sell but eventually the excitement and thrill of creating will be gone. When you create what you really want to, there is a piece of you in there. People respond to that. Also, if at all possible find yourself a little place to create. When I first started I was sewing in every room in the house. Its hard to focus when all your stuff is everywhere! Now I have a new little studio where most of my stuff “lives”. I can “go” to work and then leave and close the door. Of course stuff finds its way everywhere but at least I know where I can send it back to!

What’s your favorite tool of your trade?
I have the sharpest pair of little scissors that I use for everything! Cutting strings, poking holes, snipping here and there. They are my favorites!

Diva Tribe Boutique

What do you create?
I crochet clothing using eco-friendly and socially conscious materials. The yarns I currently use include one that is 100% soy (a by-product of making tofu!), one that contains 75% reclaimed new cotton that has been spun into yarn and one that is a wool made and dyed by a women's cooperative in Uruguay.

How did you come up with your company name?
I've had DivaTribe (www.divatribe.com) since 2001, so it was natural to call my boutique the DivaTribe Boutique. Back in 2001 when a friend and I were brainstorming names for our new site, we came up with DivaTribe and liked the contrast between "Diva" and "Tribe". The name stuck.

When and why did you decide to start your business?
I originally opened the boutique in June 2004 as a consignment store to help other women get their name and products online and "out there" for the public to find. I re-opened the boutique as it currently is in April 2006. I wanted to try my hand at running a business that was in line with my own values in terms of environmentalism.

Where do you get your inspiration for your projects?
I start with the yarn and go from there. I try to find yarns that are unique and satisfy my desire to work with Earth-friendly and/or socially conscious materials. I let the yarn then dictate the project based on how it works up.

What is your main goal for this year?
My main goal, as a new business, is to make the best marketing decisions I can to get my items in front of my target market. That, and have some fun in the process. :)

What advice would you give to someone starting a creative business?
Do your research, and don't be afraid to ask others who have gone before you for help and advice.

What have you learned by working with so many different artists?
A better question would be what HAVEN'T I learned! Seeing so many different businesses with so many different products and ways of conducting themselves, I have realized how important it is to do what you love, believe in yourself and trust that there are others out there who will love what you do too. It's simply a matter of finding each other. Simple, but not necessarily easy.

And just out of curiosity, what’s your favorite tool of your trade?
My wonderful yarns - they are so fun to work with!
