What do you create?
I create screenprinted cards and personalized stationery.
How did you come up with your company name?
I wanted an abstract name that didn't directly reference what I was making, so I'd be free to expand. I also love the way that 'p' mirrors 'b', so I saw great logo potential. Then of course, brown is my favorite color, and I'm very fond of pink! There are a lot of other silly reasons too, but I love my business name.
When and why did you decide to start your business?
Pink Loves Brown began officially in February 2005. I began my business as a way to merge my creativity and my analytical side. I've always loved to draw and work on crafty projects, so that's fulfilled by working on new designs. Then there's the logical, math-loving part
of me, and I really enjoy the various aspects of running a business.
Where do you get your inspiration for your projects?
So many of my designs are simply based on things that I love, and that I love to draw. Ladies in skirts, eyeglasses, scissors, bicycles... these are all things that really reflect my sense of style and the objects I use daily. My cards are like little conceptual self-portraits.
What is your main goal for this year?
I've had a wonderful first year, and I'm looking forward to applying all that I've learned. I'd like to see Pink Loves Brown continue to grow, and I'm also excited to be offering design as Smart & Lovely! It will be a busy year, but it will also be exciting and rewarding.
What advice would you give to someone starting a creative business?
Know what you want, and always work toward that. So many people start a business, but it never gets much further than a hobby. It takes a lot of time and effort to become successful. By having a clear idea of what you want for your business, you're able to make smarter choices, and that will pay off over time.
And just out of curiosity, what’s your favorite tool of your trade?
